318 and no spark. Had trouble starting last night . No spark. The coil is open. Started looking for parts online and compared them to what I have installed. Starter cranks, fuel is going to carb, no spark. Tested the coil and both sides check ok. When testing the control module (red lead to coil -, black lead to engine ground, jumper from battery + to coil +) the voltage stays at battery voltage; it doesn't swing between 1 volt and 12 as I turn the flywheel by hand ... John Deere 318 Spark issue B43G. I have a 1985 318 that doesn’t have spark when cranking but when I let the key go it shows spark briefly. I have adjusted the points, installed new ignition coil and condenser. Not sure what to check next.

It is popping and is backfiring through the carb. I bought some starter spray, and same condition - cranks and backfiring through carb seems to be more. Went to check spark plugs.
