If the top strap (the area of the frame above the cylinder) is checkered and the right side of the barrel is stamped "S&W 357 Magnum", it is a S&W Hand Ejector (pre-Model 27). You can shoot a box or 2 of Mini Mags, but they're a bit harder on the gun than Standard Velocity. Because the Model 41 comes from the factory with a light recoil spring that's designed to operate the gun on Standard Velocity ammunition.

It appears to have been refinished but not by S&W at some point. A good cleaning and treatment for any rusting and it should make a good shooter.

The smooth back strap is definitely a Model 58 feature. A real tell on this gun is the juncture between the barrel and frame. The Model 58 frame isn't grooved for a barrel rib and is also lower than the barrel rib on a target sighted barrel. You will have to remove the grips to see it.The two guns have very different trigger and grip safety systems. The 1911 has 3 different length triggers avaliable, as well as 2 different main spring housings, (arched or flat) and different width grips, all on these can be used the custom fit the gun to your hand and trigger finger length.
