Is there a story behind this or are they just XP? I actually got a cutscene with two of the drow after I killed the beholder (but didn't kill the drow he un-petrified).

Drow Druids could work. There are arachnomancers in Menzoberranzan who specialise in turning into spiders already, and Underdark is a valid Land Druid terrain. Spores would also work given how common myconids and spores are in the Underdark. Drow druid is very fun. Not optimal but talking to animals is hilarious.
