If you press the button and hear it click back at the trunk, then that would suggest that the cable has let go. If you don't hear a click, you may have a blown fuse or a failed trunk latch motor.

It is spring loaded when it closes, but will not release unless you pull the release cable. It would be very difficult to get the seat out far enough to reach the release cable.

They're there to let air out when all the windows are up, so they're not designed to be check valves against water.And I found it: cut and spliced a few of the wires under the trunk lid, and now the ONLY way the trunk latch can possibly trigger (electrically, anyway) is if the button on the trunk lid and the button on the fob are held for 1/2 to 1 second at the same time, single press.
