ToME is one of my favorite games of all time. I've logged over a thousand hours into it so far and still keep coming back. As others have mentioned though, DCSS is probably the archetypal modern roguelike in ways that ToME isn't, as ToME really mucks with the formula a lot in ways that I enjoy but still changes things up a lot.
