Fantasy has grimdark elements but is mostly filled with tales of heroism and overcoming impossible odds in the traditional sense. 40k is where it gets fully grimdark. There are no good guys, every act of “heroism” serves an evil end (fascism, xenophobia, etc), and for every survivor there are a million who died in every conflict.
