The receiver should be case colored however. The finger lever will be "square backed" for 1939, and rounded for 1940-41. After resuming production of the 39A after the war in 1945, the letter B was used as a serial number prefix.

My problem is with the serial number - there is no prefix. The number "259" is stamped below the lever and on two locations internal... but they all are just "259". The Genfield's used the same serial numbers as the Marlin's. The model 57, might have a 2 letter code on the barrel, if so you can go to the part on the serial number sheets, that says Non 39A's 22's. This will only work if it it was made between 1962 and early 1968. Jul 12, 2014 · I bought a 39a about 10 months ago that has a serial number of B4655. It is in pretty nice condition. The bluing is still good and the receiver has some case coloring still in good shape. Is this a 1940 rifle or a 1941. Can't get over how smooth this rifle works.
