Not Revit specific, but definitely a nice hack. Get a multi-button mouse. Use either the built-in software, or a program like AutoHotkey to reprogram the extra buttons. Some great buttons to have at your mouse-fingertips are Shift, Cntrl, Tab, Esc. This lets you add to or remove things from your selection set only using your mouse hand.
