I'm looking for advise on what I'll need and what to watch out for.Nothing is a really easy swap outside of a like-year 4.2. You need the transmission as well for either Triton, plus the driveshaft for a 5.4 if you want the beefier 9.75 rear as well. You will have to splice away to make an Exploder 5.0 work, as I am sure that engine harness is quite different.

I see this all the time, since your Ranger is a 2004 + truck with the updated gauge cluster you're going to have to use a 2003 and older gauge cluster with ALL of the wiring from a 2003 and older Ford Ranger or the wiring from the Explorer. If someone ever came up with a way to keep the 2004 + gauge cluster with a V8 ...It looks like it wouldn't be too bad. The older 4.0 (OHV, 91-2000) and the 3.0 used the same transmission as your current truck. The newer ones (SOHC) used a variant of it, so it shouldn't be too much different. Engine mounts are probably different enough that it won't drop straight in. Plus you could stay true to your old gear head form and go carbed which is a very easy install in these trucks. Re: 2.9 to 4.0 swap questions. it should be pretty much unbolt from one, bolt into the other. you'll have all the wiring, mounts, hoses, etc. your 2.9 trans will work, but probably not for long. the 2.9 trans isn't made for the torque of the 4.0. i would recommend just running the 4.0 trans or find a 5 speed for a 4.0.
