He has a 5 speed "stick" and a high and low range. Then he can split the 5 gears in either the high range or both. Usually, you can't use the 5th gear change in high range. So a 13 speed would have 5 gears in low range. 4 gears in high range, plus a split of the 4 in high (8). An 18 speed would be 5 gears in low range with a split (10).
